Minutes of the 2019 Triennial General Meeting of the Membership
Held over two lunchtimes during ACLALS 15-19 July, 2019
Wednesday 17 July, 2019
1. After a welcome from the Chair, Chris Prentice, to the general membership, the
meeting opened with tributes to past Chairs and longstanding members of ACLALS,
Geoff Davis and Michael Wessels
a. Heart-felt tributes to Geoff Davis were presented by Chris Prentice (Chair,
ACLALS 2016–2019), Russell McDougall (SPACLALS), and Laura Moss
(CACLALS); tributes were read on behalf of Gareth Griffiths (SPACLALS),
Ganesh Devy (Independent scholar and activist), and Christa Stevens (Brill).
Spoken tributes were accompanied by powerpoint slides and a slide show of
photographs of Geoff, indicating the breadth and depth of his activities,
collaborations and friendships over many years across the many branches of
ACLALS. Many written tributes had preceded the meeting among members
from across the organization who were shocked and saddened by his passing
in late 2018.
b. Cheryl Stobie presented a very moving tribute to immediate past Chair of
ACLALS, Michael Wessels (SAACLALS), who also suddenly and tragically
passed away in 2018. Cheryl spoke as a colleague and a friend of Michaels,
and members of ACLALS from across the organization shared the sense of
loss of a respected scholar and a truly genial and generous host of the 2016
ACLALS conference held in Stellenbosch.
2. Chris Prentice summarized the remaining issues for discussion at the meeting:
a. Branch reports
b. The name of the organization (on which branches had been invited to send
submissions in advance ready for discussion)
c. Chair and triennial conference succession

3. Following the tributes Branch reports were presented in absentia from India
(IACLALS) and West Africa (WAACLALS).
As the lunch hour had passed, it was agreed to suspend the meeting and reconvene the
following lunchtime.
Thursday 18 July, 2019
4. The meeting reconvened and reports were presented by Branch Chairs of CACLALS
(Canada), EACLALS (Europe), WIACLALS (West Indies), SPACLALS (South Pacific),
SAACLALS (South Africa), EAACLALS (East Africa), and SLLACLALS (Sri Lanka).

5. ACLALS Name change: a wide range of views were presented, both on behalf of
branch membership ascertained through polls prior to the conference/meeting, and
in the AGM itself.
In favour of the name change:
a. View that the term ‘Commonwealth’ is increasingly dated or obsolete
(CACLALS, EACLALS, WIACLALS)
b. The name no longer ‘speaks to’ – thus attracts – the younger
scholars/members needed to ensure the continuation of the organization
c. Although only one response was received from Southern African
membership, Iri, as SAACLALS Chair suggested that in the context of South
Africa’s larger decolonization processes, a new name may be called for.
d. Observation that ACLALS no longer receives funding from the
Commonwealth, so what merit to retaining the name (WIACLALS)?
Arguments against name change (or concerns raised about it):
e. What alternative name would be better?
i. Question raised in IACLALS’s report presented in absentia
ii. Postcolonial (CACLALS, EACLALS), but ‘postcolonial’ may be offensive
to some (eg. Indigenous people in Australia, SPACLALS)
f. Prefer to stay with ACLALS to retain relationships among member countries
(EAACLALS)
g. Preference for ‘Commonwealth’ as widely recognized name (WAACLALS
branch supports keeping ACLALS)
i. Other expressions of negative consequences of name changes
h. ACLALS was never founded with the idea of Commonwealth funding; the
membership and meaning of Commonwealth has already expanded, and
there are other advantages and opportunities gained through the
Commonwealth affiliation (SLLACLALS).
Some branches (eg. CACLALS) have it in their constitutions that they have the right
to change their names. The ACLALS organization cannot refuse the right of a branch
to change its name.
i. Suggestion that branches that wish to do so may change their names, leaving
ACLALS as it stands at present (Michael Bucknor, WIACLALS; Selina Tusitala
Marsh, SPACLALS)
j. Question of whether ACLALS will be required to continue affiliation of such
branches (Russell McDougall, SPACLALS)
The discussion concluded with an agreement that ACLALS will remain the name of
the overarching organization, but that branches may choose to change their names.
Elleke Boehmer raised the need for the organization to refresh for the next
generation of 21st century scholars. Melissa Kennedy, Helga Ramsey-Kurz and Joe (?)
advocated a more dynamic use of social media for communication between
scheduled conference events.
6. No offers to host the next triennial were received prior to the AGM, so with the
question of succession and the location of the 2022 triennial still unresolved —

though East Africa indicated the possibility of hosting in 2025 — Chris Prentice would
continue discussions with branches following the conference.
7. The meeting concluded.

                    <text>ACLALS Chair’s Report
As many of you are probably aware, my term as chair was somewhat unusual. No decision was
taken at the last ACLALS meeting in Auckland in 2019 about where the association would be
headquartered next or where the next conference would be held. I was approached after the
conference by the past chair Chris Prentice. I want to thank Chris for all her work facilitating this
transition. This has been a period of challenge for ACLALS, with the loss of funding by the
Commonwealth Foundation several years ago, the passing and retirement of some very active
long-term members, and of, course, more recently, the COVID-19 pandemic.
One irony of the pandemic is that the activities of the Commonwealth largely shifted online,
and I was able to be more involved in some discussions than I might have been otherwise. I
took whatever opportunities I could to draw attention to the importance of academic freedom,
the humanities, and the value of post-secondary education. I had a few objectives for my own
term as chair, some that reflected my own sense of priorities, and others that emerged from
the directions set at previous meetings in 2013 and 2016.
Firstly, it was important that we updated our communication strategy. ACLALS has a permanent
home on the web! The domain www.aclals.net is registered internationally, with godaddy
hosting the site. The advantage of this is that the address remains the same, regardless of
where in the world the ACLALS leadership is located. This means that the website does not
need to move every three years. It is simply a matter of transferring editorial control from one
person to another. it’s a pretty simple wordpress site that I have since maintained myself and
with the help of students.
The ACLALS website is also home to a lot more information about ACLALS than in the past.
Going back to at least 2016, members of ACLALS and the ACLALS executive had been looking at
ways to both preserve the ACLALS archive, and to record the history of the organization. In the
last three years, we’ve tackled that in a few ways. The ACLALS archives now have a permanent
electronic home. This is also a living resource that can be added to in the future. Sorthing
through thousands of documents was a substantial task. Creating this digital archive would not
have been possible without the support of the following organizations:
The Information and Communications Technology Council Work-Integrated learning Digital
Program
The Ontario Work Study Program
The office of Indigenous Initiatives at Lakehead University
The Lakehead University Library
Specifically, I want to acknowledge the work of Connor D’Angelo, Ashley Little, and Mariah
Toset, all of whom worked to scan documents into the archives over this three year period.
Mariah also sorted and labelled them.

I also want to thank Sara Janes, the Lakehead University archivist, for arranging web storage,
helping to set up the archives and providing training on the Omeka system, amongst other
things.
This archive means an end to shipping boxes of papers around the world every three years,
which is beneficial from an environmental and financial perspective.
In addition to the archive, the ACLALS website now has a narrative history, summary of past
conferences, and a list of resources for further research. In addition to those supporters
mentioned above, this project was funded by the Mitacs Globalink Research Internship
program.
I also want to acknowledge Mariah Toset and Yi Wang who wrote the historical narrative you
can now find on the ACLALS website, along with a complete list of past conferences, an
overview of key figures, and an extensive bibliography of sources about ACLALS and its history.
This is a living project. The fact that this is web-based means that more documents can be
added to the archive in the future, and the history can be expanded and developed as future
executives see fit. The archives and bibliography mean that this is a resource for current and
future scholars.
Another major concern I had was to regularize the organization’s finances, after several years
with no bank account and no external funding or system of internal funding for the ACLALS
office.
Back in 2016, ACLALS resolved that regional branches would send 10% of membership fees to
the central ACLALS organization. There are a number of reasons why ACLALS needs to have
some funding. First of all, we are required to pay an annual membership to the Commonwealth
Consortium for education. Secondly, even a very modestly run ACLALS office needs to maintain
the website and perform administrative tasks that may occasionally cost money. It has been
difficult, I know, for many branches to collect membership fees in the context of the pandemic,
but I hope we will continue to move forward.
I want to thank Canadian ACLALS and European ACLALS for providing that seed funding for
ACLALS over the past few years.
As may have been evident from my previous list of thanks, part of maintaining robust finances
for ACLALS and getting the resources needed to accomplish projects is applying for grants. This
conference is being sponsored by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of
Canada, Toronto Metropolitan University, University of Toronto, University of British Columbia,
Lakehead University, St. Jerome’s University, Saint Mary’s University, the University of New
Brunswick and the journals Canadian Literature and Studies in Canadian Literature. Thank you
so much to all of our sponsors, without whom we would not be here. I also want to thank
ARIEL for their contribution of a subscription for the graduate student prize.

I also want to thank the ACLALS vice-chairs, Neil Kortenaar and Judith Leggatt, Site Coordinators
Anne-Marie Lee-Loy and Hyacinth Simpson, and organizing committee members Laura Moss,
Veronica Austen, Karina Vernon, Sarah Dowling, John Ball, Asma Syed and Henghameh
Saroukhani. It really does take a village to put together an event like this, particularly under the
challenging circumstances that we faced over the last three years. I also want to thank the folks
at Lakehead University – particularly my colleagues in the department of English, and my dean,
without whose support I could not have taken on this role.
I also want us all to take a minute to acknowledge the work of Mariah Toset. I’m sure many of
you have interacted with Mariah over the last year, who, in addition to playing a pivotal role in
putting together the ACLALS history project has played a really pivotal role in this conference.
From finding us our wonderful conference hotel, to the conference program, to the virtual book
fair, many of the elements of this conference would not have come together were it not for
Mariah’s incredible work.
I also want to thank the regional chairs: Michael Bucknor, Mohd Asaddudin, Walter Perera,
Marcel Okhakhu, Alex Wanjala, Iri Manase, Michael Griffiths, Radhika Mohanram and Asma
Sayed.
Lastly, I want to thank all of you for coming. Though I have been to several ACLALS conferences
over the last 20 years, I never envisioned myself as the chair. I’m happy to have been able to
steer the association through this difficult time. There were some moments in the last two
years where I wondered if we would really be able to come together in person in Toronto this
year. It’s gratifying to see it happening.

                    <text>CACLALS REPORT FOR ACLALS 2022
Submitted by Dr. Asma Sayed, President (2019-22), June 2022
CACLALS hosted its annual conference from June 15-18, 2022, virtually at Kwantlen
Polytechnic University in British Columbia. The annual general meeting was held on June 18th.
This year’s conference was much smaller compared to last year’s. We received fewer abstracts
than we usually do. Yet, we have had approximately 75 registrations, one keynote, one plenary,
two roundtables, and 35 presentations. We had some though-provoking, insightful, and inspiring
sessions over the four days. Julietta Singh was the keynote speaker.
This year, we could have gone back to the Congress, but navigating the Federation’s online
portal is somewhat complicated and we could not find a good reason for our members to pay
high Congress fees for a virtual conference experience which we were able to offer at a much
lower rate. Also, our two key partners, ACCUTE and ILSA were hosting their conferences inperson at different times in different places. We had been in talks with both the associations and
were hopeful that some partnership will work out this year as well. Thus, our conference dates
also coincided with ILSA’s conference dates, but finally, it proved to be too much work for both
the associations to make things work when one association was hosting virtually and another inperson. Thus, we hosted our second independent and virtual conference this year. Having said
that, we do recognize the value of hosting our conference alongside other associations and in
partnerships with other associations. There is also much to be desired about networking when
meeting people in person. Thus, we will be returning to the Congress next year as it will be
hosted in-person at York University, and we will hopefully be able to host events in partnership
with our partner associations such as ACCUTE and ILSA.
During the year, in response to the Federation’s Igniting Change report, we organized a panel to
discuss our response to the report and agreed to include an EDID representative position on our
executive and to sign the Charter. We have now officially signed the Federation’s EDID Charter.
This year, we also completed the steps for changing the name of the association as per our
constitution. The discussion about the name change started with Mariam Pirbhai writing a letter
to ACLALS executive in 2019 before she stepped off her role as the President of CACLALs.
Over the three years since then, we have gone through multiple steps including a name-change
panel discussion, a survey, a referendum, and received approval of more than 75% of the
membership. As of December 31st, as per our constitutional requirement, we had completed all
the steps. No more steps are required. Thus, the Canadian Association for Commonwealth
Literature and Language Studies is now officially called the Canadian Association for
Postcolonial Studies (CAPS). As we have discussed at the conference (and before that as well),
we recognize the limitations of this name, but this is what our membership came up with, voted
for, ratified, and endorsed. Ultimately, what matters is that we work centring our intentionality
and positionality and not let our work be limited by the association’s name. At the very least, we
have signalled our moving away from the colonial concept of the Commonwealth.

1

The next executive will do the work of getting the name changed with the Federation, changing
our logo, our name on the bank account and other such practical matters.
For over a year now, CACLALS President, Asma Sayed, has represented CACLALS at
ACLALS and served on the ACLALS conference committee. She will continue to represent
CACLALS during ACLALS as she will be attending in person in Toronto in July.
Dr. Sayed mentioned at the AGM 2022 that she was glad to leave CACLALS/CAPS in a strong
financial position. She thanked KPU, her institution, for their full support over the past two
years. Both years, KPU provided two Zoom accounts and a full-time tech support person for all
the days of the conference. Knowing what other associations are paying for these services, this
could have easily cost us approximately 3K-5K per year, and thus over the two years,
CACLALS managed to save 6K to 10K in technical expenses. This also allowed to keep the
conference registration fees extremely low at between 20 and 50 dollars. Some of the expenses
were covered through Sayed’s grants through KPU. Sayed reminded that while CACLALS is in
a strong financial position, as we return to in-person conference in a city such as Toronto in
2023, and go back to the Congress, next year, our expenses will be high, so we need to be
mindful of how we use the funds and work on attracting more funds.
Membership thanked Asma Sayed for three years of her leadership as the President of
CACLALS, and the members of the executive, for steering the association through some
extraordinarily challenging times.
A new executive for 2022-24 was elected at the AGM. Executive structure has been changed
and new positions have been added to ensure a better sharing of the workload. Jesse Arseneault
will serve as the next President post-ACLALS in July 2022.

                    <text>EAACLALS REPORT

EAACLALS has had its activities hampered since 2020 due to the ongoing Covid 19
pandemic. Activities such as the National Book Week that take place in September of each
year, and in which the association has always been actively involved have been suspended
over the period, and thus our interactions with corporate entities such as the National Book
Council of Kenya and the Kenya Publishers Association have been hampered, denying us
much needed visibility.
EAACLALS was privileged to send representatives to represent ACLALS at the Conference
of Commonwealth Ministers (CCEM), which took place at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi from
27-28 April 2022. The conference discussed the current situation within the education sector
for Commonwealth countries. It was made evident that the Covid 19 pandemic has had a
negative impact on education, and that efforts should be made to mitigate against these effects
on learning. Environmental issues also came up as a major factor hindering progress in
education, and as such sustainable solutions to improve the quality of Education for all.
Kenya’s Ministry of Education was handed the leadership of CCEM’s secretariat as from
2022-2025. EAACLALS hopes to work closely with the Ministry in formulating and
implementing education policies for Commonwealth countries over that period.
Members of the executive committee of EAACLALS have proposed that their chair, Dr. Alex
Wanjala of the University of Nairobi vie for the presidency of ACLALS during the 19th
triennial of the association which will in Toronto, Canada in July 2022. EAACLALS through
its executive committee further expresses its desire that the 20th ACLALS triennial be hosted
in East Africa. It is hoped that our candidate will receive the support of the other Chapters in
the Association.

<text>Report of the Chair, AGM 2022
Radhika Mohanram

2019-2020
17th triennial conference at the Cardiff University, Wales, May 2020
Cardiff University made a successful bid for the 17th triennial conference in May 2020 to
coincide with the Hay Festival. A CFP on the topic of Transcultural Mo(ve)ments:
Memories, Writings, Embodiments was prepared and approved by the Board. The CFP
resulted in, 135 approved proposals and arrangements were made for a face-to-face
conference including developing a conference website. By late March the country was in
lockdown due to Covid and Cardiff University cancelled all campus conferences. With the
uncertainty caused by the pandemic no concrete decisions of any sort regarding a future
conference could be made.
Dec 2020-June 2021
In December 2020, Cardiff was once more approached to host the cancelled conference
and, after enquiries, it was decided that it would be held online because of the
continuing uncertainty caused by the pandemic. By this time, Cardiff University had a
well-developed platform for online conferences; however, the take-up for the online
conference was fewer than for the face-to-face version. In the end, there were 98
papers offered by participants as well as 5 plenary addresses during the 3 day conference.
The plenary addresses were as follows:
1) Kirstie Bohata of University of Swansea (“‘Wealish‘: Transcultural Experiments in
Plurilingual Writing“);
2) John MacLeod, University of Leeds (“Bloody Postcolonialism”)
3) Ruth Vanita, University of Montana (““Forced Apart: how Legal Discrimination against
LGBT People Affects Transcultural Movement”)
4) Michael Bucknor, The University of West Indies ("Transcultural Violence, Intimate
Embodiments: Marlon James's Queer Poetics")
5) The final plenary was the Anna Rutherford Memorial Lecture delivered by Ann Collett,
University of Wollongong (“A Braided Biography of Australian Poet Judith Wright and
Canadian Painter Emily Carr: The Challenge and Value of Transcultural Research and
Collaborative Writing”).

Wasafiri magazine which focusses on International Contemporary Writing presented a
wonderful round-table event of discussions with creative writers at the conference.
The Board also decided to waive registration fees for the conference as expenses would
not be incurred for bringing in the plenary speakers or by granting bursaries to attendees.
This was a popular move that ensured maximum participation at the conference.
At the AGM meeting of EACLALS held at the conference, a new Board to hold office
between May 2021 and March 2023 was elected:
Radhika Mohanram (Chair)
Isabel Carrera (Previous Chair)
Melissa Kennedy (Secretary)
Miasol Llarina Eguibar Holgado (Treasurer)
Devika Karnad (Student Representative)
Ala’a Al Ghamdi (Webmaster and Social Media Co-ordinator)
It was decided that the 18th Triennial conference would take place in Paris, France
between 27th-31st March 2023. It was also decided that the headquarters (or official
registration) of the Association would stay in Austria and that the bank account would
also remain in the same bank, with the new Treasurer handling the account through
digital means. This made logical sense as to transfer accounts to the UK and to convert
to pound sterling was unnecessary because the accounts would revert back to France
and the Euro in 2023.
August and September 2022
The plenary addresses from the Cardiff conference as well as a number of sessions which
had been recorded were made available to all members on the conference website for
two months.
November 2021-March 2022
The EACLALS website which was old was re-developed to make it more intuitive and userfriendly (Eaclals.com).
April 2022- June 2022
At Board meetings it was decided that to ensure the longevity of the Association more
attention had to be focused on post-graduate students. Bi-monthly online events will be
held on topics which are of interest to post-graduates. The first event held in April 2022
was a lecture by Dr Michela Borzaga who gave a talk on "Developing Thought-systems
and Voice in Academia: A First-gen Testimony.” This lecture was well-received and in
June 2022, two presentations were made in the Work-in-Progress series. They were by

Khadija Koroma from the University of Leicester-UK who spoke of her PhD on the
Heinemann African series fiction and Bianca Cherechés from the University of ZaragozaSpain who discussed two Dalit autobiographies by women.
All Board members, especially Devika Karnad and Ala’a Al Ghamdi, have worked
extremely hard to keep the Association successful and infuse new ideas into it. We thank
them for all the time that they have dedicated to EACLALS.

                    <text>3-year Report, 2020-22
Indian Association of Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies (IACLALS)

The current executive of IACLALS (the Indian chapter of ACLALS) took charge in February, 2020. Within
weeks Corona pandemiv struck in March, 2020, and everything came to a standstill. After several
months we got our acts together and began our activities online to maintain a sense of continuity. Most
our activities still continue to be carried out online. In the last three years IACLALS had held the
following annual conferences:
1. “Reimagi(ni)ng Identities in the Global South: Challenges, Transgressions and Articulation”, CoHosted by The Department Of English, Jadavpur University February 5-7, 2020.
2. “Utopias and Dystopias in Our Times”, (ONLINE) Co-hosted by Janaki Devi Memorial College, Delhi
University March 17-20, 2021.
3. “Circulations, Mediations, Negotiations: New Perspectives on Translation from South Asia”,
(ONLINE) Co-hosted by Janaki Devi Memorial College, Delhi University, March 2-5, 2022
In each of the above conferences we held twelve business sessions in which papers were read out, two
special sessions surrounding two prizes given away by the IACLALS annually - The Meenakshi Mukherjee
Memorial Prize for the best paper published by a member in the last two years and C D Narsimhaiah
Prize for the best paper presented during the conference, in addition to several plenaries, the inaugural
and the valedictory sessions. During the same period IACLALS held three online lectures in the series
“Distinguished Lectures” on themes and aspects of English Studies and Postcolonial Literature.
We published the fifth issue of our annual journal on the theme, “Post-truth: Phenomenon, Reflections,
Ramifications” in 2021. It contained, besides the editorial, 17 scholarly articles addressing different
aspects of post-truth, and several book reviews. The journal is available in both print and electronic
versions. We also published the ninth and tenth issue of our e-Newsletters, the latest one is the most
extensive so far, running into 113 pages of reading materials encompassing the following sections:
Tributes/ Obituaries
Reports of Conferences/Seminars/Symposia, ogganized/attended by members
New Publications by members
Awards/Honours/Achievements
Creative Writing Section
New Cfps/Notices
We held a memorial meeting for Professor Shubhendu Mund, former vice chair of IACLALS who passed
away on May 28, 2021.

The IACLALS executive held 10 online meetings through the above period to discuss policy issues, events
to be organized, journals to be published and future course of action.

<text>Report from SA Region: SAACLALS for the period 2019-2022

Status of membership: SAACLALS has been struggling to have an active membership. There has not
been any annual registration, payment of subscription fees and engagement in annual
conferences/colloquia for a very long time. The Covid conditions from February 2020 to the present
worsened the situation for most Academic Associations with institutions introducing financial austerity
measures and slowly opening up to hosting virtual platforms much later into the pandemic.
As Chair I have been reduced to simple functions of forwarding emails from the ACLALS Chair and other
regional branches using an old email list based on South African academics and students who attended
the ACLALS Triennial at Stellenbosch in 2016.
Continued emails requesting membership renewal do not receive follow-ups and while in the past,
people would become active- annual renewal of membership and payment of subscriptions- to attend
the Triennial, this year I did not receive any enquiry.
Status of Finances: There hasn’t been any subscriptions this year, and the account has had its balance
depleted by bank charges. I realised that it was ‘locked’ because of inactivity while attempting to check
the balance consisting of funds inherited in 2016 and the very limited subscriptions paid by few South
African-based attendees at Auckland 2019. The bank gave me 25 working days to deal with the matter
and I await their call/email.
Activities and Accomplishments
A regional conference planned for May this year, which would have seen the appointment of new
leadership with a full complement of SAACLALS Committee members could not go through and there
are plans still to hold it hopefully this year.
The Current Writing Special Issue in honour of Michael Wessels, former Chair of SAACLALS, co-edited
with Cheryl Stobie at UKZN was finally published in October 2021.
Membership Drive: a regional conference and meeting should usher in new leadership with a full
complement of committee members and devise a membership drive strategy.

                    <text>SPACLALS Interim Report
31/5/2022
Activities:
The SPACLALS board elected in 2021 to forego the biennial conference that would have normally
happened in early 2021 due to uncertainty associated with the COVID19 pandemic. Instead the
committee decided to hold a series of online speaking events called “Transnational Commonwealths.”
These included two invited panels of two speakers each and we also put out a call which saw one
successful application. In the end this was the running order, which is also recorded and watchable here:
https://southpacificaclals.wixsite.com/website/events

1. A trans-Indigenous scholarly dialogue: Selina Tusitala Marsh and Jeanine Leane
recording; February 15th
2. World Literature in World Histories: Sugar with Victoria Kuttainen and Bianka Vidonja
Balanzategui; June 4th
3. Unsettling Times with Tony Hughes-D’Aeth and Jonathan Dunk; July 8th

Brief budget summary:
SPACLALs began 2021 with $8464.53 in its operating account. The following payments have been made:
• $250 honorarium payments to three featured speakers (including 1 x $10 international fund
transfer fee)
• $150 honorarium payment to one general speaker
Two general membership payments ($50) have been paid into the account along with $7.20 interest. As
at 30 August 2021, the total in the operating account is $7458.74.

An AGM will be called in mid-2022 (soon), to plan a 2023 conference.

                    <text>SLACLALS Report 2019 -2022
The SLACLALS Executive Committee had planned to hold its triennial general meeting and
conference “Continuing Postcolonialism” for which more than a year’s notice had been given
soon after the last 2019 ACLALS triennial in Auckland but postponed both in response to
requests from the University of Colombo and the Gratiaen Trust—a scheduling conflict would
have prevented SLACLALS members who belonged to these organisations from
participating in the triennial. The rearranged dates (29 to 31 May 2020) did not work out
either because the island was in complete lockdown. The continuation of Covid-19,
curfews, closures, and social unrest have prevented regular meetings, and even online
activity rendered problematic because the most senior members of SLACLALS do not have
ready access to internet (available only sporadically anyway on account of extended power
cuts). SLACLALS is currently trying to initiate a project to digitize previous issues of its
journal Phoenix. The Association expects to hold its much delayed triennial later this year if
life returns to normal. To this end it has begun to negotiate with the sponsors of the
postponed 2020 conference to fund a low key event in 2022.

                    <text>WAACLALS Report
The last three years were very challenging for us in Waaclals. Apart from the challenges
of Covid 19, which slowed down many activities, the economic downturn of our
environment was also very impactful. In spite of these challenges, the regional body
was able to organise conferences in Douala, Cameroon, Benin City, Nigeria and Cape
Coast in Ghana.
The conferences were well attended and three volumes of The Griot, the official journal
of the Association, have been published. We are currently trying to find new members in
Ivory Coast, Benin Republic, Sierra Leone and Liberia. We are hopeful that we will be
able to take the next conference to Benin Republic.
We have issued communiques from all the conferences and have interfaced with
Government and other NGOs on the issues of Postcoloniality and societal
developments. I am happy to report that we have attracted some attention on account of
these efforts.
Our current membership stands at 30 people and hopefully, this should grow further in
the months ahead.

<text>WIACLALS Report for ACLALS Triennial Conference 2022 Toronto, Canada

Although the past three years have been dominated by the Covid pandemic, WIACLALS
continued its publication of the Journal of West Indian Literature and staged 2 out of a possible
3 annual conferences in the region. The Departments of Literatures in English at the 3 main
campuses of the University of the West Indies (Mona in Jamaica, Cave Hill in Barbados and St.
Augustine in Trinidad) and the English Departments at the University of Guyana, The University
of the Bahamas, the University of Puerto Rico, the University of Miami and St George’s
University (Grenada) all continued (mostly online) their readings, symposia, postgraduate
seminar presentations, creative writing workshops and workshops for CSEC and CAPE students
preparing for their high school terminal examinations, distinguished lectures and other literary
activities.
The 2019 West Indian Literature Conference took place at the University of Guyana, 17-20th
October under the theme, “Hinterlands: Journeys of the Imagination.” With over 70
participants, the conference featured panels (including a special focus on Guyanese/
International writer Wilson Harris), screenings of films, theatrical presentations (excerpts from
Derek Walcott’s Ti-Jean and His Brothers and a new Guyanese play, Laugh of the Marble Queen
performed by the National Drama Company), as well as an art exhibition by artists of the
Division of Creative Arts at the University of Guyana.
Due to the Covid 19 Pandemic, no conferences was held during the 2020. The conference was
deferred to October 2021 and staged as a virtual conference by the Cave Hill, UWI faculty in
Barbados. The conference was held under the theme “Contemporary Currents in Caribbean
Literature” between October 28 to 30, 2021. The conference spotlighted Caribbean speculative
fiction via, Grenadian-born s/f writer, Tobias S. Buckell and Trinidad and Tobago speculative
fiction writer R.S.A. Garcia, who both gave keynote lectures. The third key-note lecture was
presented by Barbadian writer, Cherie Jones. Given the statue of Barbadian born Caribbean
writer, historian and thinker, Kamau Brathwaite who passed recently, the conference honoured
his staggering contribution to Caribbean scholarship, thought and creativity with a number of
panels and a special Commemorative Conversation between internationally regarded
Ghanaian/Jamaican/American writer Professor Kwame Dawes and the devoted Brathwaite
scholar, Professor Elaine Savory.
Our next conference has been planned as a hybrid conference to be held at the University of
the Bahamas between October 13-15, 2022 under the theme: “The Future of West Indian
Literature.”
Between 2019 and the present time in 2022, the Journal of West Indian Literature published 7
issues: April 2019 was a general issue edited by Dr Rachel Mordecai; November 2019 was
Special Issue on Caribbean Science/Speculative Fiction Guest Edited by Dr Debra Providence of
the Cave Hill UWI Campus; April 2020, the journal dedicated a surprise-festschrift in honour of

retiring academic and then Managing Editor, Professor Evelyn O’Callaghan—this issue was
guest-edited by Professors Alison Donnell and Bénédicte Ledent; November 2020 was another
general issue edited by Professor Glyne Griffith, (who noted in his editorial preface the seismic
loss of towering creative figures such as Kamau Brathwaite, Austin Clarke, V.S. Naipaul, Garth St
Omer, Derek Walcott, critics such as J. Michael Dash, Michael Gilkes, and Édouard Glissant, and
of course, our own long time editor of JWIL and former WIACLALS chair, Dr Victor L. Chang)—
most recently we lost Barbadian man of letters, George Lamming. For April 2021, the journal
doubled its output with two issues, a Special Issue on Caribbean Archives, Guest Edited by Dr
Maria Fernández Campa and a general issue curated by Dr Lisa Outar, Senior Editor; November
2021, featured a Special Issue on Dub Poetry, guest edited by Dr Phanuel Antwi and guided by
Senior Editor, Dr Michael A. Bucknor. Our most recent issue is a Special Issue on Kamau
Brathwaite guest-edited by Professor Kelly Baker Josephs and shepherded by our Acting Editor
in Chief, Dr Lisa Outar.
The journal continues to play a role in creating a high standard, visually appealing, cutting-edge
publications on Caribbean Literature and Culture on our digital platform.
WIACLALS has had a vibrant three years of great literary activity within the region. At our next
conference, we will continue to audit our institutions and put plans in place to ensure that our
conference, our journal and our literary organization will have a solid basis for continuing in the
future and for consolidating a rich literary and critical tradition.
